Description
The dataset contains the absence and presence of species in 125 different plots on the island Storholmen in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard in August 2025.
The plant species was recorded as present 1 or absent 0.
By using percentage coverage method the data was collected.
The dataset was made to look at barnacle geese effects on the vegetation.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,324 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
Finding plots The plots used in this project were provided by Dr. Maarten J.J.E. Loonen. From previous projects a map of the island with a grid was used to find the right plots for sampling. The purpose of this division is to eventually sample every square of the grid on the island. This map was divided into 800 squares. Plots that were not sampled in previous years were identified, and a plot was set up in the middle of the square. The GPS UTM coordinates, altitude, slope angle and slope aspect were taken at each plot, and the topography was recorded for five categories (slope, ridge, valley, flat or other). Vegetation recording For each plot, a 50x50 centimeter frame was placed, and all species inside the frame were recorded in a species list.
| Study Extent | The sampling of the data took place between the 12th and 18th of August 2025 on the island Storholmen in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. |
|---|---|
| Quality Control | Unis students confirmed the identification of species and used Svalbard flora. Dr. Maarten J.J.E. Loonen was present during the sampling and identification, in case questions arose and help was needed. |
Method step description:
- To record different species, a species list with species found at Storholmen from previous years was used. The recording was done in a 50x50 cm frame for each plot. Every species found in this frame was noted down with a "1" for present. The ones that were absent from the plot are written with a "0".
