Description

Glacier retreatment exposes new habitats available for colonization by different plant-taxa. This study focuses on vegetation cover and frequency of the vascular plant populations along a postglacial chronosequence by Midtre Lovébreen, and the relative strength of Salix polaris, measured as a combination of C/N-ratio and SLA. In total six sites were visited, spanding from 1899 to 11 years since glacier-retreat. The five oldest sites are part of a study conducted by Hodkinson et al. (2003) and were revisited by former students attending the AB-201 course at The University Centre in Svalbard in 2024 and 2025. The youngest site is an additional site, and was established by the students in 2024.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 186 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Sampling Methods

Vegetation mapping was done by a gridded quadrat with 16 inner squares and 25 intercepts, and the point-intercept method was used for estimating cover and abundance. Leaves of Salix polaris were collected at all sites with a high enough abundace for analyses, i.e. minimum 50 leaves in total at each site. The leaves were collected along transects inside the sites, parallell to the glacier-front. This resulted in representative data for SLA- and C/N-ratio-estimations for each site.

Study Extent The sites were visited on the 11th, 12th and 15th of August 2026, two sites each day.

Method step description:

  1. Specific Leaf Area (SLA) of Salix polaris was calculated by transects of each site. The leaves were scanned with Epson Perfection xxxxx for measuring leaf area, and dried at 70 degrees Celsius for 72 hours, before weighing. Leaves from all transects within a site were mixed and devided into eppendorf-tubes together with a tungsten-bead, for grinding in a Retsch mixer mill. The samples were then transfered into tin cups to be further processed by an organic elemental analyzer (vario EL cube). This analyzer measured nitrogen- and carbon-percentage, out of which C/N-ratio for all samples were calculated.
