Description
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 125 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
A 20µm phytoplankton net was used to gather samples. At the Ny-Ålesund Pier West, the net was lowered to two metres, and at Ny-Ålesund Pier East it was lowered to five metres. For ST1 the net was lowered to 20m, and 30m at KB3. However, due to difficult weather conditions and unsteady waters the phytoplankton net at KB3 was calculated to have reached 15 metres at a slope. Due to low phytoplankton abundance, 2-4 replicates were performed to concentrate the sample at each sampling event.
| Study Extent | The samples were collected from boat outside of Ny-Ålesund at KB3 and ST1 and from the pier at Ny-Ålesund in 2026 between 9th and 12th of April. At the Ny-Ålesund pier, two sampling sites were used. One at the east side of the pier, and one on the west side. The east side of the pier was sampled twice, once on the 11th and once on the 12th of April. |

Method step description:
- For samples taken from boat a 20µm phytoplankton net was lowered to approximately 20m. Two replicates were performed at both KB3 and ST1 to concentrate the sample. Due to weather conditions at KB3, 30m of rope was let out to account for water currents. Consequently, the sample was on a slope, instead of vertical through the water column. For sample events taken from the pier, a 20µm phytoplankton net was lowered by hand. 4 replicates were done at both sites at the pier. At the east side of the pier the net was lowered to 5m depth, and at the west side of the pier the net was lowered to 2m depth. After collection the samples were analysed by participating students with compound microscopes to identify organisms to genus or species. All identifications were recorded in the data sheet. Due to low abundance of organisms, all taxa were recorded as the lowest organism quantity.
