Description

This is an inventory created by searching species names from almost 800 scientific publications from 1869 until 2023. This inventory was then assessed by taxon experts and synonyms or obvious errors removed. The inventory forms the data for the redescription of the Svalbard terrestrial and freshwater invertebrate fauna appearing in Coulson et al. in prep. Arctic Science.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,089 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

The project arose from a Special Collection invitation to Arctic Science associated with the 30 Year Jubilee of the University Centre in Svalbard. This paper will appear in Arctic Science.

Title Evaluation of the terrestrial and invertebrate fauna of the High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard
Funding Internal
Study Area Description The land area with the bounding coordinates of the Svalbard Box.

Sampling Methods

Names extracted from publications describing this fauna from Svalbard.

Study Extent Evaluation of the resident invertebrate community of the terrestrial and freshwater habitats of Svalbard.
Quality Control Names of each species group checked by one or more specialists in that particular group.

Method step description:

  1. Names collated in a Excel sheet and ordered by taxonomies. These names then assessed and corrected by specialist taxonomists and errors / synonyms removed.
