Description

DNV is a risk and classification company with roots dating back to the founding of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in 1864. DNV operates in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors.

The data produced by DNV is stored in their own Environmental Monitoring database (MOD). It comprises approximately 2.8 million species occurrence records, as well as chemical and geology records. This information comes from grab sampling conducted in areas around oil drilling stations. GBIF Norway is working with DNV to publish the species abundance data in the MOD database.

The grab sampling process is done on a yearly basis around the months of May and June, but not all stations are sampled each year. In general sampling is done around each station every third year, and in some areas samples have been repeated since the 1990s.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 50,033 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

Biology samples are taken with a van Veen grab and from a surface area of 0.5 m^2 There are several sample stations around each installation. The distance and direction from the main installation is stored in locationRemarks. The exact latitude and longitude for each sample station is provided. Approximately five grabs are made at each station, each a few meters apart. The grab numbers are provided in the eventRemarks.

Study Extent Barents sea, Ekofisk area, Finnmark, Møre area, Nordland, Oseberg, Sleipner, Statfjord, Trondelag, UK Shelf

Method step description:

  1. The identification of species in each sample is in general done at DNV's Biology lab but samples are also sometimes outsourced to external taxonomists.
