Description

The community composition of suspended phytoplankton cells was investigated at 10 stations on the West Greenland continental shelf as part of the EU project ECOTIP. Water was collected with a 12 L Niskin bottle at or close to the fluorescence maximum (between 20 and 50 m). Onboard the ship, the water was gently transferred into a carboy. From each carboy, a subsample of 100 mL was transferred into a glass bottle, preserved with 1 mL acidic Lugol’s solution for later microscopic analysis. From this field campaign, a cruise report is publicly available on Zenodo (https://zenodo.org/doi/10.5281/zenodo.5913276). In addition, the following data sets are available: 1) the concentration of suspended chlorophyll a (Chl a >0.7 and >10 micrometre), phaeophtin (Phaeo >0.7 and >10 micrometre), particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) in the water column (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00039), 2) the downward flux of Chl a (>0.7 and >10 micrometre), Phaeo (>0.7 and >10 micrometre), POC and PON at three stations (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00041), and 3) the community composition of sinking protist cells on (https://doi.org/10.15468/kw3rs9).

Project Data

Data were collected as part of the project "Investigating ecosystem tipping points and cascades in the Arctic Seas" (ECOTIP). ECOTIP operates at the important link between the physical and biological systems, where a regional change in the hydrography of the Arctic Ocean might trigger a biological change at the base of the marine food web with cascading effects both on the regional and local socio-economic systems through fisheries, and on the global climate through carbon sequestration. ECOTIP is attempting to anticipate and predict these changes.

Sampling Methods

At each station, the water was collected using a 12 L Niskin bottle attached to a sampling rosette. The water was gently transferred from the Niskin bottles to carboys (using a silicon hose) and a subsample of 100 mL was preserved with 1 mL acidic Lugol’s solution and the sample was stored cool (+4 C) and in darkness until further analysis ashore.

Study Extent At each of the 10 sampling stations on the West Greenland continental shelf, water was collected at or close to the sub-surface fluorescence maximum.

Method step description:

  1. The microscopic analysis was later conducted at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) in Sopot, Poland and the phytoplankton taxa were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level.
