Description
The data consists of comprehensive species lists of benthic macrofauna collected as part of environmental monitoring surveys conducted by Akvaplan-niva from aquaculture farms (data are from reference stations at least 1km distance from farms). The data were analyzed to assess large scale patterns across Norwegian fjords as part of Sen et al., 2022 (Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science).
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 78 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Title | Environmental monitoring data reveals geographic and depth-based differentiation of benthic fjord communities (Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2022) |

The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
Van Veen grabs were used for collecting sediment samples for measuring enviromental parameters and quantifying benthic macrofaunal communities. CTD was used for water measurements.
Study Extent | Norwegian fjords (locations at least 1km distance from aquaculture farms). |
---|
Method step description:
- CTD casts were taken for measuring water temperature, depth, salinity, and oxygen concentration. Sediment samples were collected with a 0.1 m2Van Veen grab. One grab was used for measuring sediment environmental parameters which consisted of pH, percent pelite (sediment fraction <63μm), total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (P) content, and concentrations of the heavy metals zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu). Two replicate grabs (in some cases only one) were taken for macrofauna: sediment was sieved over 1mm mesh and preserved in 4% formaldehyde and identifications were made to lowest possible taxon (usually species) at the Akvaplan-niva lab.
