Hensikten med visuelle undersøkelser i forbindelse med petroleumsaktivitet er å kartlegge tilstedeværelse og omfang av arter og naturtyper som er på norsk rødliste (Artsdatabanken 2018) eller på OSPARs liste over truede og/eller minkende habitat (OSPAR, reference number: 2008).

The Entomological collections contain research material of all extant terrestrial and aquatic arthropod groups except crustaceans:Hexapoda, Myriopoda, Tardigrada, Arachnoidea and Cheliceratea.

More than 430 000 needle mounted insects have been identified with genus or species names and an additional number identified to family level. Moreover, the collection contains about 42,000 tubes with ethanol-fixed insects identified to genus or species level, and 29,000 slides (mainly aphids and chironomids).

Of other terrestrial arthropods we have more than 15,000 tubes with ethanol-fixed material of spiders determined to species or genus. In addition, we have more than 1200 dried galls and mines.

The bulk of the material is from the last 70-80 years and is available for loan to other scientific institutions for the purpose of scientific studies. Other persons must make arrangement with a local institution that may be willing to take responsibility for the loan.

The lichen herbarium TROM, The Arctic University Museum of Norway (former Tromsø Museum) contains c. 22 500 specimens.

Much of the material is old and was collected in Northern Norway and from the Norwegian Arctic islands by J. M. Norman, Bernt Lynge and other botanists during the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The collection has increased during our own research activity during recent decades, with important additions from Southern Hemisphere areas, such as Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Bolivia, New Caledonia, Reunion, Bouvet Island and Antarctica . TROM may now have one of the world largest collections (c. 1 800 samples) of the Pannaria/Psoroma complex within the family Pannariaceae and has a number of type specimens.

The Lichen Herbarium contains (as per 2014) 90 000 lichens. The majority is from Norway, but there are also larger, important collections of lichens from North America (T. Tønsberg), Bouvet Island and Antarctica (T. Engelskjøn). Important collectors are J.J. Havaas, J.M. Norman (part of his collection) and T. Tønsberg. The entire lichen collection has been data recorded and the c. 50 000 lichens collected in Norway can be searched for in the common”Norsk Lav Database” (NLD). From this link/connection there is information on red-listed lichens in Norway. T. Tønsberg at the lichen herbarium publishes the lichen exsiccate “Lichenes isidiosi et sorediosi crustacei exsiccati”.

Biofokus is a non-profit organization for providing biodiversity survey information on biological diversity to decision-makers and the public in Norway. Biofokus contributes to the knowledge-based management of Norwegian nature. Biofokus focuses on fieldwork to secure updated and relevant data on botany, zoology, ecology, and survey for respective areas. A high level of competencies is a prerequisite for quality registration and reporting of biodiversity data. Biofokus employees cover a wide range of species groups and have a broad understanding of ecology in the respective nature types, including forest, cultural landscapes, and freshwater.

The vascular plant herbarium TROM at The Arctic University Museum of Norway (former Tromsø Museum) houses about 200 000 specimens.

The collection is arranged in four parts: Nordic, Arctic, ‘Other foreign’ and Garden plants. TROM is particularly rich in accessions from the North of Norwegian mainland. Among the Nordic collections, 80-85 % originate from North Norway, Troms og Finnmark and Nordland counties. Herbarium also contains valuable collections from other Nordic countries as well as the circum-arctic areas. The Arctic herbarium contains over 10 000 specimens from Svalbard, Bjørnøya, Greenland, arctic Russia, arctic Canada and Alaska.

The Moss herbarium is believed to contain 80 000 specimens. The majority of the material is Norwegian, but the herbarium also holds important collections from Bouvet Island and Antarctica (T. Engelskjøn). Important collectors are E. Jørgensen, B.B.L. Kaalaas, J.J. Havås and T. Lillefosse. As of May 2005 data of c.10 000 of the specimens have been recorded, among them the Norwegian red listed mosses.

This is the largest herbarium at NTNU University Museum, containing specimens mainly from Norway and the Nordic countries. Most of the specimens are collected in Central Norway. In addition, the vascular plant herbarium contains around 30 000 specimens from the rest of the world.

One of the oldest parts of the collection consist of the herbarium after bishop Gunnerus (1718-1773), which laid the foundation for the first national flora “Flora Norvegica” published by Gunnerus in 1766.

Another significant part of the collection is the Arctic collection from Alaska and Canada by Professor Olav Gjærevoll consisting of about 6 000 specimens.

Among the main bulk of specimens from central Norway the Dovrefjell Mountain region is especially well represented. You also find a focus on documentation of the expansion of non-native species in the flora especially by the collections by Eli Fremstad.

The collection includes more than100 type specimens.

Algae herbarium TRH, NTNU University Museum - Version 11.2652

The algae collection contains various groups of photosynthesizing organisms not belonging to vascular plants, bryophytes or lichens. The three best represented groups are the red algae, green algae and brown algae.

The main part of the collection was established by Mikael H. Foslie (1855-1905). Foslie was an internationally recognized expert on coralline algae and received objects from colleagues and expeditions from all over the world. The coralline algae collection by Foslie is kept as a separate collection consisting of nearly 4000 specimens, including about 550 types. A catalogue of the collection was published in Gunneria in 2005. The other parts of the algae collection mainly consist of algae collected along the Norwegian coast.

In addition to the 550 types of coralline algae in the Foslie collection, we have 150 type specimens of other algae.

Bryophyte herbarium TRH, NTNU University Museum - Version 1.2587

The TRH bryophyte herbarium contains specimes of Bryophyta, Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta from most parts of the world, but is best represented for the Northern Hemisphere and especially northern parts of Europe. Almost the whole collection has been digitized.

The oldest specimens in the collection is by Hans Strøm from 1745. Collections from the late 1800s and early 1900s comprise the foundation of this collection, primarily through the work of Ingebrigt Severin Hagen who worked at the NTNU University Museum from 1907 until his death in 1917. There was also a peak in activity from 1970-1980 mainly due to the joint efforts of A.A. Frisvoll and K.I. Flatberg. After 1998 the activity has again increased meaning that we have a relatively high proportion of recently collected specimens.

Taxonomically Bryophyta constitute about 75% and Marchantiophyta 25% of the collection, with Anthoceratophyta with less than 1%. These numbers roughly represent the species diversity of the main taxonomic groups at northern latitudes. Sphagnum is particularly well represented with more than 25 000 specimens. Much of this is of rather recent date and a result of the taxonomic research by Kjell Ivar Flatberg. Schistidium and Racomitrium are other well represented genera due to the taxonomic work of Hans H. Blom and A.A. Frisvoll. The collection includes more than 2000 type specimens of bryophytes.

The top ten countries/areas are: Norway, Svalbard with Jan Mayen, Sweden, United States of America, Canada, Germany, Greenland, France, Iceland and the Russian Federation. Svalbard is very well represented with close to 20 000 occurrences, the main contributor to this material is Arne A. Frisvoll that visited Svalbard and Jan Mayen several times during the 1970’s.

The geographic focus of the fungus collection is Norway with Svalbard, and this make up about 90 % of the collection. All specimens are registered in the database. Most of the material is from Central Norway, but Northern Norway is also well represented. The collection includes original material, type specimens, of several newly described species. Most fungal groups are represented, but ascomycetes, particularly discomycetes, are well represented.

From outside Norway the collection includes specimens from Argentina (Tierra del Fuego), Finland, Spain (Mallorca) and Sweden.

About 65 type specimens are included in the collection.

The Invertebrate Collections is one of the University Museum of Bergen’s large collections of scientific zoological material. “Invertebrates” is a traditional grouping for animals without a backbone. At our museum, like in many other scientific collections, invertebrates are the remaining part of the animal kingdom when vertebrates, insects, spiders and millipedes (entomology) have been accounted for. A large part of our collection consists of marine invertebrates from Norwegian waters, but it also includes material from all over the globe, and some limnic and terrestrial groups. The vascular plant herbarium is divided into a Nordic Herbarium, including ca. 400 000 specimens, and a General Herbarium, including ca. 200 000 specimens. The Nordic herbarium covers Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Svalbard, Jan Mayen and Bjørnøya, and the General Herbarium covers all other areas of the world. In the Nordic Herbarium collections from western Norway are dominant, and important collectors are T. Lillefosse and J. Naustdal. A larger collection from mountain regions in South Norway has been collected by R. Nordhagen and others. In the General Herbarium important collections from Iran and Afghanistan (Per Wendelbo and others) and of plants of the families Ulmaceae and Moraceae from tropical Central and South America (C.C. Berg and others) are stored. The work to make the information about all specimens available via the web is in progress, and until February 2013 around 215 000 specimens from the Nordic herbarium had been entered into the database."

The marine invertebrate collections at the NTNU University Museum goes back to the activities initiated by Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus in the 1760's (Bakken et al. 2011). Only a handful specimens in the collection date back to this period. From around 1870 an exploration and mapping of marine environments in central Norway started, initially the Trondheimsfjord, but later also coastal areas outside the fjord. Sampling activities contributing preserved specimens have been at irregular intervals since the 1870s, and impact in number of objects and taxa represented has mainly been a result of several large projects. Apart from larger sampling programmes, small and single collecting activities has taken place over the period since the start. The collection holds about 120,000 records of most has been digitised. The geographic span of the records are mainly Norwegian waters. Within Norwegian waters a majority origins in the central part of Norway, including the 600 m deep Trondheimsfjord, and the costal areas outside the fjord. In addition there are samples from along the Norwegian coast, primarily north of the Trondheimsfjord, also representing the deep-sea areas in the Norwegian Sea, and from Svalbard. Samples from international marine environments are mainly from neighbouring Nordic countries. But also a number of samples from the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic, resulting from the Norwegian Tristan da Cunha Expedition 1937-38. All animal phyla with known representing high number of taxa world-wide are represented, but it is obvious from the holdings that some groups are overrepresented compared to others. This reflects the taxonomic expertise among the staff since Vilhelm Storm started exploring the Trondheimsfjord in the1870s (Mork & Sneli 2011). Norwegian waters have been important for describing new species in the early days of natural history explorations, thus representing type localities for a range of marine species described from the 18th century onwards (Oug et al. 2014). The collections at NTNU University Museum holds several type specimens, including from Tristan da Cunha, which has been described in detail (Bakken 1999).

The terrestrial and liminic invertebrates systematic collection at the NTNU University Museum dates back to activities initiated by Bishop Johan Ernst Gunnerus in the 1760's and objects from Bjarne Lysholm’s collection of Coleoptera from around 1880-1939. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1960's and up to today and includes the Lepidoptera collection of Carl Fredrik Lühr and Runar Krogen, the Coleoptera collections of Karl Erik Zachariassen and Dagfinn Refseth. A recent acquisition of approximately 160 000 identified specimens came from Frode Ødegaard’s collection previously hosted at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Today's collection covers most of the major groups of invertebrates with Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and Hymenoptera as the largest parts of the collections (approximately 40 %, 20 %, 10 % and 7 % respectively in 2017). Some groups are overrepresented compared to others. This reflects the taxonomic expertise among the staff since the first regular employee in the 1840's and donations of private collections. The collection includes objects from all other continents except the Antarctica. Examples from other parts of the world are chironomids from America, Africa, Europe and Asia, a historic circumpolar collection of Coleoptera. Coleoptera from Central America, Australia, southern Europe, Africa and Papua New Guinea. There are also Lepidoptera from Malawi and terrestrial molluscs from Madeira, Cuba and some other countries.

The genera Bryoria and Cladonia as well as pin lichens in a wide sense, i.e. genera like Calicium, Chaenotheca, Sclerophora etc are well represented in the collection.

The lichen herbarium at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo, consists of a Norwegian herbarium (c. 110,000 specimens), a foreign herbarium (c. 200,000 specimens), a type herbarium (c. 1,100 specimens), and a collection of exsiccatae (c. 5,000 specimens). The herbarium has important collections from Norway, Iceland, the Arctic (especially Greenland, Jan Mayen, Bear Island, Svalbard, and Novaya Zemlya), Macaronesia, and East Africa (especially Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda). The material includes, e.g., the collections of Mathias Numsen Blytt (1789-1862), Søren Christian Sommerfelt (1794-1838), Niels Green Moe (1812-1892), Johannes Musæus Norman (1823-1903; part), Bernt Lynge (1884-1942), Eilif Dahl (1916-1993), and Hildur Krog (1922-). Computerization of the herbarium labels started in September 1994, and by September 2010, all Norwegian and c. 30,000 foreign specimens are recorded. About 80% of the material is from mainland Norway and Svalbard, remaining parts mostly from Sweden and Finland. Significant collections of the large genus Sphagnum are from the Trøndelag area, northern Norway and Svalbard. The Sphagnum material has recently been revised.

Bryophytes at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo.

The bryophyte herbarium at the Botanical Museum, the University of Oslo, comprises a Norwegian herbarium (ca. 185,000 specimens, of which ca. 100,000 mosses, ca. 15,000 peat mosses and ca. 35,000 hepatics), a general herbarium (ca. 80,000), a type herbarium with ca. 100 types and a collection of older exsiccata (ca. 5,000 specimens).

The herbarium contains important material among others from Norway, the Arctic, Macaronesia and Tristan da Cunha. Important collectors are Matthias Numsen Blytt (1789-1862), Søren Christian Sommerfelt (1794-1838), Christian Kaurin (1831-1898), Frantz Caspar Kiær (1835-1893), Nils Gregers Ingvald Wulfsberg (1847-1888), Elling Ryan (1849-1905), Baard Bastian Larsen Kaalaas (1851-1917), Ingebrigt Severin Hagen (1852-1917; in part), Nils Bryhn (1854-1916; in part), Eugen Honoratius Jørgensen (1862-1938; in part), Johannes Lid (1886-1971) and Per Størmer (1907-1991).

Buildup of the herbarium database started in 1997. Currently approximately 185,000 specimens have been imaged and so far 68,000 specimens databased from the Norwegian collection.

On behalf of Aquaculture farmers has Aqua Kompetanse AS conducted a survey of vulnerable species and habitats in shallow waters (0–50 m) and deep waters (>50 m). The purpose of the survey is to identify the presence and observed density of vulnerable species that may form habitats listed on the Norwegian Red List for Ecosystems and Habitat Types (Artsdatabanken, 2018), on OSPAR’s list of threatened and/or declining habitats (OSPAR 2008-06, revised in 2021), and among the proposed management-relevant habitat types for fisheries and aquaculture (Institute of Marine Research Report, 2024-16). At depths greater than 50 meters, the focus is mainly on corals, sponges, and sea pens. However, other red-listed and/or vulnerable species that live in close interaction with the three-dimensional habitats formed by the aforementioned groups will also be described when relevant. At depths shallower than 50 meters, the survey includes kelp forests, soft-bottom shoreline areas, coarse substrate bottoms, marine seagrass beds, exposed blue mussel beds, oysters, scallop populations, corals, sponges, sea pens, and any other red-listed shallow-water species. The investigation is based on the Institute of Marine Research’s proposed methodology for surveying vulnerable species and habitats in deep water (>50 meters depth) in connection with applications for marine aquaculture (Kutti and Husa 2021) or on the recommended methodology from the fishing and environmental directories (2022).

The Mycology herbarium (fungarium) at The Arctic University Museum of Norway (former Tromsø Museum) includes c. 39 300 objects.

About 90% of the accessions originate from the Norwegian mainland, mostly from Finnmark, Troms and Nordland counties. The foreign collections are mainly from neighboring countries. One third of collections consists of Ascomycota and there is a significant collections of Pyrenomycetes from Norway and other Nordic countries. Particularly the collection of corticolous and lignicolous Pyrenomycetes on Salix is good, and includes both Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes. In addition, the family Xylariaeae is represented with many specimens, particularly within the genera Hypoxylon and Nemania. The type collection of Pyrenomycetes s. lat. consist of 28 specimens.

Specimens collected and reported by the company SAM-marin (now STIM) from various environmental monitoring surveys in coastal areas and fjords from Agder to Nordland County. The material was collected in the years 1973-2000 and later deposited at the University Museum of Bergen (UMB) as documentation of species records and as a resource for research in biosystematics. Datasets from environmental monitoring are important documentation of species occurrences in time and space, and such datasets are of particular interest when specimens have been deposited in Museum collections as this will allow for future revisions and updates of species occurrence data. The material is stored as bulk samples of main taxon (e.g. polychaeta) from a given locality, typically a grab sample, and represents an important collection, although not with the same status as the traditional taxonomic Museum collection.

Our collections of amphibians and reptiles at the University Museum of Bergen, Norway are relatively limited in size: in total about 1200 specimens. Much of this material are whole animals preserved in ethanol. Even if the collection contains numerous species from exotic parts of the world, our main targets today are the limited number of species found in Norwegian fauna.

Today there is no active collecting of herptiles at the University Museum and new material are mainly animals that have been found dead for various reasons.

The Bird Collection of the University Museum Bergen houses 7100 specimens. The majority are study skins (incl. a few old mounted birds) and about 400 birds preserved in ethanol. The collection has a focus on species from Norway, but also includes (mainly old) specimens from localities in other parts of the world. The collection is currently growing by about 40-50 birds per year. These have typically been accidentally killed by e.g. airplanes, fishing gear, windows, cars, cats etc., and have been delivered to the museum by members of the public or local authorities. A few are also normally collected during field work by museum staff. DISCLAIMER: The dataset is curated and will receive updates, please always make sure to download the latest version. Occurrences of marine bottom organisms at 20–500 m depth in the Froan-Sularevet area outside Frøya in Trøndelag, Norway from 30 August – 9 September 2025.

The study area is in or near a proposed marine protected area https://faktaark.naturbase.no/?id=VP00001512. The data was collected with a remotely operated vessel (ROV) that filmed the seafloor in 18 line transects with a total length of ~24 km.

Taxonomic identification was mostly done on-the fly in the field, by an expert in vulnerable marine organisms, by studying the live high definition video footage from the ROV.

Depth and position was obtained via the ROV's navigation software (EIVA NaviPac) set to UTM zone 33 geodetic datum EUREF89/ETRS89 (EPSG:25833). Raw ROV positions are unreliable and were later corrected and transformed to standard WGS84 decimal degrees. Coordinate uncertainty? Vertiucal datum?

When possible, each individual organism was identified. For each reported video segment of ~1 second the total number of observations of each taxon in reported in the variable individualCount. Some organisms, were uncountable using visual inspection and are recorded as present (with no individual count provided).These are coral Clavularia borealis, kelp species Laminaria hyperborea, Saccharina latissima, and the stony corals Desmophyllum pertusum, and Madrepora oculata.

Quality control: Taxonomy was validated against World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) using GBIF Species API. The final Darwin Core occurrence data was validated against GBIF data validator service prior to publishing.

This dataset consists of all the epimegabenthic fauna marked and enumerated from five seafloor georeferenced image mosaics from two canyons with methane seep conditions on the continental slope off the Lofoten-Vesterålen archipelago of northern Norway. Two of the mosaics are from the inner part of the seep from the southern of the two canyons, one mosaic is from the inner part of the seep from the northern canyon and three mosaics are from the edges of the seep from the northern canyon. Videos of the seafloor were obtained with the the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ægir from the research vessel Kronprins Haakon, maintaining an altitude of between 1 and 1.5 m. Images were extracted every 3 seconds via the free software ffmpeg and using the images and their associated navigation data, georeferenced mosaics were generated with Agisoft's Metashape software. The mosaics cover areas betweeen 133 m2 and 400 m2 . The mosaics were inputted into Arc Desktop and using the Editor tool, all fauna were identified, marked and enumerated. All individuals were marked to obtain numbers for each taxon. Colonial or encrusting animals were outlined to obtain areal coverage. Identifications were made to the lowest possible level which was species in many cases, but only phylum in some cases. Glacier retreat in Svalbard exposes new terrain that undergoes ecological succession. Vegetation development was investigated along the postglacial chronosequence of Midtre Lovénbreen near Ny-Ålesund, building on sites first studied by Hodkinson et al. (2003) and revisited after ~25 years of accelerated warming. Vegetation cover, soil moisture, and leaf traits of Salix polaris (specific leaf area, SLA, and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, C:N) were recorded across six forefield sites. The findings support successional dynamics described two decades earlier and emphasize the influence of ongoing climate warming on community assembly in the High Arctic.

This study aims to do a repeated survey along two proglacial chronosequences near Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. This study will revisit and sample the same sites as those studied by Hodkinson et al. (2004) in their work "invertebrate community assembly along proglacial chronosequences in the high Arctic". their study demonstrated that the succession was predictable, directional and deterministic closely linked to plant colonisation, soil development and species specific traits.

Since the study was conducted in 2004 climate change has increased temperatures causing the glacier to further retreat. With temperatures in Svalbard increasing with approximately four degrees in the past century. The Arctic is particularly vulnerable to climate change due to a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification, whereby the region is warming up to four times faster than the global average.

In addition to analysing community assembly and assessing explanatory abiotic/biotic factors, we're also evaluating potential climate-driven shift in colonisation patterns.

Three CCTV cameras are installed in the Hywind Tampen floating offshore wind farm in Norway for the purpose of health, safety and environmental (HSE) monitoring. However, the data collected by these cameras also offer the potential to document presence, abundance and behaviour of birds within the offshore wind farm. To investigate this, Equinor partnered with Spoor to rapidly scale this approach, and contribute to filling key gaps in our understanding of bird movements in and around offshore wind farms.

The birds in the dataset were identified by applying Spoor's AI bird-monitoring technology to Hywind Tampen video material provided by Equinor. This is a dataset collected by students at the University Centre in Svalbard through the course AB-202, Arctic Marine Biology, in the spring of 2025. In this dataset, we investigated the biodiversity of zooplankton at four different locations around Svalbard: IsK, Kongsfjorden, Smeerenburg, and St. Jonsfjorden. On behalf of SalMar Farming AS has Aqua Kompetanse AS conducted a survey of vulnerable species and habitats in shallow waters (0–50 m) and deep waters (>50 m). The purpose of the survey is to identify the presence and observed density of vulnerable species that may form habitats listed on the Norwegian Red List for Ecosystems and Habitat Types (Artsdatabanken, 2018), on OSPAR’s list of threatened and/or declining habitats (OSPAR 2008-06, revised in 2021), and among the proposed management-relevant habitat types for fisheries and aquaculture (Institute of Marine Research Report, 2024-16). At depths greater than 50 meters, the focus is mainly on corals, sponges, and sea pens. However, other red-listed and/or vulnerable species that live in close interaction with the three-dimensional habitats formed by the aforementioned groups will also be described when relevant. At depths shallower than 50 meters, the survey includes kelp forests, soft-bottom shoreline areas, coarse substrate bottoms, marine seagrass beds, exposed blue mussel beds, oysters, scallop populations, corals, sponges, sea pens, and any other red-listed shallow-water species. The investigation is based on the Institute of Marine Research’s proposed methodology for surveying vulnerable species and habitats in deep water (>50 meters depth) in connection with applications for marine aquaculture (Kutti and Husa 2021).

This dataset encompasses the results of an exhaustive survey focused on vascular plant biodiversity within the Drammensdalføret region, specifically targeting the predominantly north-facing southern slopes covering an elevation range of 81–389 meters above sea level. The study area is characterized by its varied terrain, from rolling to rugged, bisected by the deep Veia Gorge with the Veia river flowing from south to north. The northern parts of the area, lying below the marine limit, feature largely cultivated flat terrains. The geological foundation comprises sedimentary rocks from the Oslo field, with a generally thin overlying layer of soil deposits. The region's long history of land use, primarily for grazing and forestry, significantly marks its landscape. Our study adopted a meticulous sampling design in alignment with the EcoSyst/NiN methodology, aiming to analyze compositional patterns and ecodiversity distances across forests. To capture the ecological variance, particularly focusing on environmental gradients such as lime richness, drought risk, and the influence of spring water, we deployed 10 × 10 m plots along semi-random transects. These transects were strategically arranged to traverse the ecological spectrum with minimal bias, ensuring a representative sampling of the area's ecological diversity. The placement of transects and plots prioritized capturing ecological variances within predefined polygons, with 48 transects and 342 plots ultimately selected for detailed examination, as outlined in the study's appendices. The dataset is structured into three key components to provide a holistic view of the study's findings: Event Core Dataset: Documents each observational event, detailing the geographic and ecological context of the plots surveyed. Occurrence Extension Dataset: Contains records of individual plant species observed within the plots, offering insights into the area's floristic diversity. MeasurementOrFact Extension Dataset: Enriches the dataset with specific environmental measurements and facts related to each observational event, allowing for a deeper understanding of the conditions under which observations were made. This comprehensive survey of vascular plant biodiversity not only enhances our understanding of the ecological diversity within the Drammen valley but also contributes valuable data to the global biodiversity informatics infrastructure through GBIF. By documenting the rich biodiversity and the intricate ecological gradients of this region, the dataset supports further research in plant ecology, conservation planning, and the management of natural resources.

This dataset includes taxonomy and vertical export rates of zooplankton abundance and biomass from long-term sediment traps between October 2017 and September 2018. Samples were collected from 2 moorings as part of the Arctic PRIZE project (SAMS, UK) and the sediment traps were processed as part of the Nansen Legacy project (UiT, NO). Records in the dataset can be divided into 2 moorings by the locationID column, either ESv (shelf east of Svalbard) or NSv (shelf north of Svalbard).

For the ESv mooring, the mooring was deployed in 183 m water depth on 21 September 2017 north of Svalbard from the R/V Lance (A-TWAIN cruise). The mooring was recovered by the R/V James Clark Ross (JR17006) on the 17 June 2018 and sensor data were retrieved and instrument batteries replaced for redeployment on the 20 June 2018. A final recovery of all sensors was done by the R/V Kronprins Haakon (Nansen-Legacy cruise) on 18 November 2019.

For the NSv mooring, the mooring was deployed in 234 m of water on 23 September 2017 north of Svalbard from the R/V Lance (A-TWAIN cruise). The mooring was recovered by the R/V James Clark Ross (JR17006) on the 14 June 2018 and sensor data were retrieved and instrument batteries replaced for redeployment on the 22 June 2018. A final recovery of all sensors was done by the R/V Kronprins Haakon (Nansen-Legacy cruise) on 25 November 2019.

Samples were taken from a long-term sequential sediment trap bottles (McLane Research Laboratories Inc., 21 bottles, aperture area of 0.5 m^2). Sample bottles (500 mL) were programmed to rotate at intervals ranging from 7 to 31 days. Sample bottles were filled with filtered seawater poisoned with formalin (4% v/v), with the salinity adjusted to 40 by adding NaCl.

For the zooplankton, subsamples (100-150 mL) were taken for the analysis of a minimum of 300 zooplankton. Zooplankton were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible using a stereomicroscope (Zeiss Discovery V20) and measured with an accuracy of 10 μm using the ZoopBiom digitizing system (Roff & Hopcroft, 1986). Biomass (dry weight) was estimated using published length-weight regressions for these or similar species (Ershova et al., 2015). The dry weight of each taxon was then converted to carbon weight following Kiørboe (2013). Species were also classified by biogeographic affinity.

Samples (0.5-2 ml) for planktonic protists identification were settled in Utermöhl sedimentation chambers for 24 h. Settled protists were counted using an inverted microscope equipped with phase and interference contrasts (Nikon Eclipse TE-300). Microplankton (>20 μm) was enumerated from the entire chamber surface at 100× magnification. Nanoplanktonic protists (3–20 μm) were counted at 400× magnification by moving the field of view along the length of three transverse transects (in special cases a magnification of 600× was used for taxonomic identification). The taxa were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible following the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). Planktonic protist carbon (PPC) was calculated by multiplying the cell counts of individual cells and resting spores by the associated carbon content of each species or group depending on cell sizes (Menden-Deuer & Lessard, 2000).

All daily fluxes (vertical export rates) were calculated depending on the volume of the subsamples, the trap area (0,5 m), and the sampling duration.

Mega-benthos was sampled from the seabed by the Nansen Legacy joint cruise 1-2, on R/V Kronprins Haakon, 6-23 August 2018 (Cruise 2018707). A Campelen 1800 bottom trawl was used after rigged with rock-hopper ground gear and towed on double warps. The mesh size was 80 mm (stretched) in the front and 16–22 mm in the cod end. The horizontal opening was 11.7 m, and the vertical opening 4 –5 m. The trawl configuration and bottom contact was monitored remotely by SCANMAR trawl sensors. The standard procedure is to tow 15 min after the trawl had contacted the bottom with towing speed of 3 knots, equivalent to a towing distance of 0.75 nautical miles (1.4 km) during a 15 min tow. The trawl settings allow the capture and retention of small-sized fish and the largest benthos (benthic megafauna) from the seabed. In addition, the trawl may also be contaminated by organisms entering the trawl when it is lowered or heaved. The sample was sorted, and each benthos taxon was counted and weighted (i.e., biomass is wet mass) and identified to closest possible taxa onboard the ship. The count of individuals per species/taxa in the trawl (Tot abun) and the wet-weight of the individuals per species/taxa in the trawl (Tot weight (kg)) was recorded. A total of 100 taxa (14 phyla, 28 taxonomic groups), were recorded with 30-46 taxa at each of the five stations. A total of 193 kg mega-benthos was collected with 15 to 88 kg wet weight per station. A total of 40.661 individuals were collected with 2.219 to 18.086 individuals per station. The hauls were standardized to a fixed sampling effort of one nautical mile: abundance per species/taxon as number of individuals per nautical mile and biomass per species/taxon as kg wet weight per nautical mile.

R/V Helmer Hanssen is an ice class research vessel owned by UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Samples for protist abundance were collected between September 2020 and August 2021 at the outer and inner part of Ramfjorden/Gáranasvuotna (northern Norway) with GoFlos as part of the Nansen Legacy project. For protist examination, a subsample of 100ml was transferred to a brown glass bottle and fixed with a mixture of glutaraldehyde-lugol. Protists were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level in accordance with the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and counted under an inverted light microscope (Nikon Eclipse TE-300 and Ti-S) using the Uthermöhl method (Edler & Elbrächter, 2010; Utermöhl, 1958).

This dataset includes benthos sampling observations from the AB202 UNIS course. The samples were collected in April 2024, onboard the Helmer Hansen vessel, along the following stations, Isfjorden (ISK), Kongsfjorden (KB3), seep site outside Magdalenafjorden and Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ). The methods chosen to accomplish this work were benthic trawlling and Van Veen grabs. Following the students sorted and identified all the observed organisms to the lowest taxonomic level possible.

In March 2023, freshwater pearl mussels was re-located in the Lysaker river. The relocation was carried out as a precautionary measure because the discharge of injection compounds from the tunnel work at Fornebubanen can cause damage/mortality to occurrences of mussel in the area of influence. Fornebubanen is obliged to monitor the mussel population in the river and report annually to the State Administrator on the condition. On behalf of Fornebubanen, NaturRestaurering AS has carried out a survey in June 2023.

The Ichthyological Collection of the University Museum Bergen houses more than 24000 lots. The vast majority of samples is stored in ethanol. The collection has a focus on samples from the Northeast Atlantic, however, it holds specimens of localities from all around the world including fishes from Antarctica and the Mid-Atlantic ridge (Mar-Eco project 2004) being a valuable reference collection for deep-sea species. The collection is still growing taking in new samples mainly in cooperation with the University’s faculty of Biology, the Institute of Marine Research (Norway), and the University of Tromsø for documenting diversity, changes in diversity, first records from hitherto un-sampled regions and re-collection of species represented by aged specimens lacking a tissue sample. DISCLAIMER: The dataset is curated and will receive updates, please always make sure to download the latest version. The provided data is likely not entirely free of errors. This dataset consists of benthic fauna and features from the Vestbrona Carbonate Field and the adjacent seafloor. The Vestbrona Carbonate Field (VCF) seep site on the Norwegian continental shelf (270 m water depth) was video surveyed with the Remotely Operated Vehicle Ægir 6000 in June 2020. Using extracted images and navigation data, two georeferenced seafloor mosaics were generated and all visible features were enumerated in ArcMap (animals, substrates, litter). Three transects just outside the VCF seep were also surveyed and fauna and seafloor features in those transects were also enumerated. The data were used in Sinner et al. 2023 Frontiers in Earth Sciences 'Lack of detectable chemosynthesis at a sponge dominated subarctic methane seep.'

## Methods ### Study area This dataset is the result from sampling at 6 stations across the Polar Front in the western part of the Barents Sea. ### Time coverage The samples were collected between 19 May 2022 and 25 May 2022. ### Sampling 11 macrozooplankton samples were collected with a Tucker trawl (1 m2 opening and 1500 μm mesh size) and towed for 10 minutes at ca. 2 knots. The targeted depth at each station was determined from the sound scattering layer identified in the echogram from the vessel's echosounder. ### Sample analysis Relative abundance from the Tucker trawl samples were analyzed per station, and taxa were counted and dried at 60 C° in pre-weighted recipients for dry weight measurements. The obtained abundances were standardized and converted to catch per unit effort, expressed in milligrams per cubic meter.

The Arctic has a diverse terrestrial microarthropod fauna which overwinters in situ in soil and vegetation. This fauna is involved in key ecosystem process, for example decomposition and pollination, and has tolerance to the Arctic’s winter conditions. However, the Arctic is undergoing rapid change. Svalbard is experiencing warming rates up to four times the global average as well as alterations in precipitation (quantity and form; snow or rain) and wind direction. These will modify the conditions experienced by the overwintering fauna. Since laboratory experiments often fail to capture the diversity of environmental stressors, we employed a manipulation experiment to use the naturally accumulating snow pack to moderate soil winter soil temperatures, combined with an extended incubator treatment, to map the duration limits of naturally induced cold tolerance. We demonstrate that the Collembola fauna can tolerate temperatures of -25°C but that, in areas devoid of snow accumulation and when soil temperatures dip below -30°C there is significant mortality. Furthermore, we demonstrate that exposure to a further extended 12 month period at -6°C, as a simple model of a situation where snow cover is not lost during the short Arctic summer, results in additional mortality with relatively few Collembola surviving. By contrast, while oribatid mites displayed similar survival over a natural winter as the Collembola, they were highly resistant to the extended exposure at -6°C, with no additional mortality occurring. We also documented survival amongst other invertebrate groups, including Nematocera and Brachycera larvae, Hemiptera (A. svalbardicum), Coleoptera (I. flagellum), and Araneae (Linyphiidae). We conclude that snow depth and winter air temperatures interact to regulate soil microarthropod populations over local scales and the functioning of the Arctic soil ecosystem. Moreover, the environmental changes currently being observed in polar regions will continue to modify this fauna and its local and micro-scale distribution.

The dataset contains an abundance of ice algae protists, including phytoplankton (autotrophic) and protozooplankton (heterotrophic). Protists were identified and counted with light microscopy using the Utermöhl method and the result are given as cells per liter (cells/L).

Population index based on traplines in young forest/clearcut and old natural spruce forest was one time a year (September) for 2018 and 2019 and for 2020-2021 two times a year (May/June and September) investigated mainly for the species: The Bank Vole (Myodes/Clethrionomys glareolus; Grey-Backed Vole (M. rufocanus and Field Vole (Microtus agrestis, but also for other species of small rodents (Rodentia) as the Wood Lemming (Myopus schisticolor) and Lemming (Lemmus lemmus) and different species of Shrews (Soricidae). Here is presented the data for 2018-2021.
