Descripción

This study displays the occurrence and abundance of benthic macroinfauna communities within Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, comparing a deep-water monitoring station with a near-shore coastal site. The fieldwork was conducted in April 2026 at two primary locations: ST1, a near-shore shallow location created and utilized by the course AB-202 at UNIS near the Ny-Ålesund pier, and KB3, a long-term marine monitoring station located in the fjord's outer basin. Benthic samples were collected using a 0.1 m2 Van der Veen grab. At ST1, two successful samples were retrieved from depths of 50.9 m and 59.3 m. At KB3, a single successful sample was obtained from a depth of 345 m.The bulk sediment was collected into containers and sieved using 1 mm mesh-size to isolate macroinfauna from debris. Subsequent laboratory analysis involved the identification and enumeration of species using microscopy to determine community composition and abundance.

Registros

Site one – S1 (near Ny Ålesund pier, ~50 m water depth) At site one, two samples were collected on 2026-04-09 using a Van Veen grab. The grab is meant for taking sediments samples on soft to medium-hard sediment. It consists of two opposite claws, that is held apart during the descent with a mechanical lock. When the grab reaches the sediment, the lock is released and the two claws close and enclose a sediment sample. The grab can collect up to 0.1 square meters of sediment, and at a depth of 20 cm. The grab has four inspection hatches that allow for easy access to the sample without opening the grab fully. The first sediment sample were taken 14:00, at 78° 65.084’ N, 011°55.311’ E, at a depth of 50.9 meter. Weather conditions were calm, with no precipitation, and a wind speed of 1.8 m/s. The grab was fully closed upon retrieval. It was opened and the sediment was collected into a bucket. The grab was thoroughly rinsed with seawater, both on the outside and inside, to ensure that all of the sample were collected. The second sediment sample was taken 14:17, at 78°56.089 N, 011°55.226 E, at a depth of 59.3 meters. Calm weather, with no precipitation, and a wind speed of 2.6 m/s. The grab was fully closed upon retrieval. The sediment samples were collected in the same manner as the first grab. Back on shore, the sediment samples where sieved using 1 mm mesh-size to isolate macroinfauna from debris. After sieving, the samples were sorted, and the species were identified and counted utilizing microscopes. Site two- (annual site KB3 ~350 m) At site two (KB3) one sediment sample was taken on 2026-04-10,18:24 with a Van Veen grab. The sampling site was at 78°57.189N, 11°57.584E, at a depth of 345 meters. There were no precipitation and no wind. The sampling was successful, and the grab had fully closed. Collection of the sediment samples were conducted with the same methods as site one. Back on shore the sample was sieved. The samples were sorted in Ny-Ålesund, but not identified or counted before arrival in Longyearbyen, 2026-04-15.
