說明

This data were collected as part of fieldwork conduct in Ny-Ålesund, on the west coast of Svalbard, for the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)’s AB-202 Marine Arctic Biology course. As part of the fieldwork, visual time-weighted surveys were conducted to record individual bird species counts, at 3 different sites: the “Marine Lab West”, facing the mouth of Kongsfjorden, the “Marine Lab East”, facing Conwaybreen, Kronebreen, and a small fraction of Kongsbreen glaciers, as well as “Amundsen tower”, facing the southern side of Blomstrandhalvøya. This dataset includes individual counts of all bird species recorded during 30-minute observer surveys.

Bird surveys were conducted in 30-minute time slots. During each survey, two independent groups recorded bird observations independent of each other. Observations were done in a 90-degree field of vision. Birds observed were identified to species or family level and number of individuals were recorded.

研究範圍 The survey was conducted at three different locations. Surveying was done east and west of the Ny-Ålesund Marine lab as well as close to the Amundsen tower. The “Marine Lab West” station’s field of view included the west side of Blomstandhalvøya, and the coastline extending from Nordvågfjellet to Kapp Guissez. The “Marine Lab East” station’s field of view included the coastline extending from Conwaybreen, to a small fraction of Kongsbreen, north of Collethøgda, and Kronebreen, south of Colletthøgda, as well as the south coast of Blomstrandhalvøya. Finally, the “Amundsen tower” stations’ field of view included the south side of Blomstrandhalvøya.

方法步驟描述:

  1. Birds were identified by UNIS Arctic Marine Biology (AB-202) students who were briefed prior to the survey on how to identify different common bird species. Individual species counts were recorded at each location, for each survey event. Each student was instructed to survey within a defined area, to ensure consistency across surveys. Diamondback HD 8X42 binoculars were used for each survey, so that all observers could see to the same distance.
