Descripción

This dataset is a species list of different zooplankton collected during the UNIS field course for AB202. Zooplankton abundance and biomass were sampled and analyzed at Ny-Ålesund. Sampling was conducted using two different zooplankton nets in two sampling locations, KB3 (Kongsfjorden Biology 3) and Station 1. WP2 net with 180 µm mesh size and 0,25m2 opening, and WP3 net with 1 millimeter mesh size and 1m2 opening. KB3 station depth was 350m and Station 1 depth was 50m. For sampling at different water columns, we used both WP2 and WP3 nets. For the WP2 net, we divided the water column into three different sections; 350-100m, 100-50m, 50-0m.

Registros

On the boat Teisten, nets were hitched to a crane by a hook at the opening of the net and slowly lowered at 0,4 m/s, to not tangle the net. When the net had reached desired depth, it was again slowly hoisted at 0,5 m/s as to allow water time to pass through the small mesh and allow for collection of animals. While the net came out of the water it was sprayed with salt water to collect all the animals in the bottom of the net, where a container is attached. This container has a filter on one of its side surfaces that lets excess water out while retaining the animals caught inside. At the bottom of this container is a valve that allows for emptying of the contents. This is transferred into buckets, labeled with their location and mesh size. Measurements were taken between 15:10 to 16:49 (local time) as that was when the driver had set aside time to operate the boat. Day one / 09.04.2026: Teisten went out to S1 and used WP2 180µm and WP3 to collect biomass, microzooplankton and a community analysis. Average bottom depth was 61,2 as the boat was moved by waves, most samples were taken from 50 m depth. Day two/ 10.04.2026: Teisten went out to KB3 and used WP3 for collection of microzooplankton. Bottom depth was 350m and samples were done at 340 and 330 m. On the way back Polarsyssel was used to collect samples at KB3 using the WP2 180µm mesh. Bottom depth was at 350 and net was lowered to 300.

Área de Estudio Sampling location: Ny Ålesund, Kongsfjorden KB3 is a long term sampling station located in Kongsfjorden (78.95403 °N, 11.95853 °E) Station 1 is a sampling station located in Kongsfjorden (78.93639 °N, 11.91966 °E) Teisten (boat) was used 09.04.2026 - 10.04.2026 for taking samples at KB3 and Station 1. Polarsyssel (boat) was used on 14.04.2026 for sampling at KB3.
