Descrição

The data was collected during the Nansen Legacy joint cruise (JC3, cruise number: 2022702) from 19.02 - 11.03.2022 onboard the research vessel RV Kronprins Haakon, along a transect in the northern Barents Sea from 76N to 82N. The dataset contains abundance and biomass of sea-ice meiofauna (> 20 µm) including large protists such as foraminifers and ciliates and metazoans eggs. Sea-ice meiofauna were identified and counted with stereo microscopy and result are given as Individuals per liter (cells/L) and Individuals per square meter (Ind/m2). Biomass (μg C Ind.-1) was only determined for alive individuals according to carbon contents for ice meiofauna taxa based on literature summarized in Ehrlich et al. (2021, doi: https://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.2020.00169), and carbon values for foraminifers were provided by de Freitas et al. (2021) for benthic species (Bolivinia sp.: 0.00875 μg C Ind.-1; Elphidium sp.: 0.126 μg C Ind.-1, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsjfr.51.4.249) and Anglada-Ortiz et al. (submitted to PiO) for the pelagic species Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (0.0013 μg C Ind.-1).

Dados Sobre o Projeto

The Nansen Legacy is a novel and holistic Arctic research project providing integrated scientific knowledge on the rapidly changing marine climate and ecosystem. A new knowledge base is required to facilitate a sustainable management of the northern Barents Sea and adjacent Arctic Basin through the 21st century. The Nansen Legacy unites about 280 researchers, students, and technicians from ten Norwegian research institutions. The research team includes interdisciplinary arctic marine expertise within physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, as well as geologists, modelers and underwater robotic engineers. Jointly we investigate the past, present and future climate and ecosystem of the northern Barents Sea. In total, the project has spent over 350 days at sea between 2018 and 2022, using the new Norwegian research icebreaker ‘Kronprins Haakon’ as main research platform. The ship-based sampling is complemented by the use of underwater robotics, year-round moored observing platforms and satellite-based observations. Complementary model tools are used to integrate field-based observations, and to investigate the dynamics of the physical and biological components of the northern Barents Sea climate and ecosystem at present and in the future. The Nansen Legacy is home to over 70 early career scientists, providing them with a unique collaborative community and supervision across institutions and disciplines. This gives rise to a new generation of holistic thinking Arctic research leaders. The Nansen Legacy runs for seven years (2018–2024), and is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. They provide 50% of the budget while the participating institutions contribute 50% in-kind. The total budget for the Nansen Legacy project is 740 mill. NOK.

Descrição do Design Our study goals were to characterize sea ice related biota including uni- and multicellular heterotrophs over the entire seasonal cycle, along a latitudinal gradient in the northwestern Barents Sea. Nansen Legacy goals: https://arvenetternansen.com/our-goals/

Métodos de Amostragem

At ice covered stations, ice cores were taken for the determination of abundance and biomass of sea-ice meiofauna and protists (lowermost 30 cm). Ice cores were taken from undeformed level ice areas with a KOVACS ice corer (Mark II coring system, diameter 9 cm) and were cut on a cutting board into the following sections, given as distance from the ice-water interface: 0-3 cm (bottom ice layer), 3-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm. All sea-ice core sections were melted in the dark and at 4°C within 24-28 h to and to reduce negative impacts related to osmotic stress 100 ml filtered seawater (< 0.22 µm) was initially added per 1 cm section.
