The population cycles of small rodents in Steinkjer Municipality, Trøndelag county in Norway have been followed during the years 2018-2021. Population index based on traplines in young forest/clearcut and old natural spruce forest was one time a year (September) for 2018 and 2019 and for 2020-2021 two times a year (May/June and September) investigated mainly for the species: The Bank Vole (Myodes/Clethrionomys glareolus; Grey-Backed Vole (M. rufocanus and Field Vole (Microtus agrestis, but also for other species of small rodents (Rodentia) as the Wood Lemming (Myopus schisticolor) and Lemming (Lemmus lemmus) and different species of Shrews (Soricidae). Here is presented the data for 2018-2021.

Traplines with ordinary (killing) mousetraps, baited with raw potatoes, have been placed out with approx. 5 m. distance in 2-3 traplines with 50 or 100 traps for 2 nights in preset transects. The same spots have mainly been used. Mouse and shrews caught have been determined to species, sex, fertility grad and weighed whenever possible. One trapline have been set in an old, natural blueberry and spruce-dominated forest. The other lines have been set in a gras-dominated clearcut field of spruce forest and a young planted regrowth area in the same habitat. The population index have been calculated as N/100 trapnights.

Descrição da Área de Estudo One trap line has been in old, natural spruce and blueberry dominated forest with a mix of pine and birch situated approx. 200 masl. The other tarpping lines have partly been a young, 3-5 m high and partly dense regrowth forest of spruce mixed with birch, and partly on a new clearcut domiated with grass and at the time no regrowth of trees. Both areas are near each other at approx. 50 masl and originally a spruce dominated blueberry forest.
Descrição do Design Traps have been set out at approx. 5 m. distance and baited with raw potatoes at predecided, marked spots. The catch have mainly been done by students under teatchers supervision. Mouse and shrews are identified to species, sex, age, weight and fertility. A population index have been calculated as N/mouse pr. 100 trapnights.

Área de Estudo This study is partly a part of a class-program in nature research for the students, but data are also collected to obtain a populations index for small rodents of the area, and also used in several bachelor-thesis where the data are compared with forest grouse density, productiviy and hunter harvests.
