Description

Phytoplankton data collected on a scientific cruise in the biology course AB-202 by The University Centre in Svalbard. The data is collected from different fjords on the west coast of Spitsbergen and by the marginal ice zone in the period 26.04.2023-01.05.2023.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 98 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

CTD rig (clorophyll-a maximum estimate), phytoplankton net (plankton sampling)

Study Extent Samples were acquired once at every sampling station, one station per fjord (see Geographic Coverage), one station per day (see Temporal coverage).

Method step description:

  1. A rig that combined CTD instruments and Niskin bottle water samplers was lowered into the water. A CTD-profile of the water column was acquired at each sampling site, from which the chlorophyll-a maximum depth was inferred. A phytoplankton net with 20mm mesh size was lowered into the water to the depth just below the inferred chlorophyll-a maximum. Plankton was collected from that depth up to the surface. The sample was sub-sampled and analyzed under a microscope, and species’ abundance was estimated.
