Descrição
The data set contains information on occurrence, counts and weights (per 11.7 diameter core) of benthic macrofauna at one location at 500 m and one location at 1500 m on the continental slope north of Svalbard, sampled in Feb/Mar 2023.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Dados Sobre o Projeto
The Nansen Legacy is a novel and holistic Arctic research project providing integrated scientific knowledge on the rapidly changing marine climate and ecosystem. A new knowledge base is required to facilitate a sustainable management of the northern Barents Sea and adjacent Arctic Basin through the 21st century. The Nansen Legacy unites about 280 researchers, students, and technicians from ten Norwegian research institutions. The research team includes interdisciplinary arctic marine expertise within physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, as well as geologists, modelers and underwater robotic engineers. Jointly we investigate the past, present and future climate and ecosystem of the northern Barents Sea. In total, the project has spent over 350 days at sea between 2018 and 2022, using the new Norwegian research icebreaker ‘Kronprins Haakon’ as main research platform. The ship-based sampling is complemented by the use of underwater robotics, year-round moored observing platforms and satellite-based observations. Complementary model tools are used to integrate field-based observations, and to investigate the dynamics of the physical and biological components of the northern Barents Sea climate and ecosystem at present and in the future. The Nansen Legacy is home to over 70 early career scientists, providing them with a unique collaborative community and supervision across institutions and disciplines. This gives rise to a new generation of holistic thinking Arctic research leaders. The Nansen Legacy runs for seven years (2018–2024), and is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. They provide 50% of the budget while the participating institutions contribute 50% in-kind. The total budget for the Nansen Legacy project is 740 mill. NOK.

Descrição do Design | Our study goals were to characterize sea ice related biota including uni- and multicellular heterotrophs over the entire seasonal cycle, along a latitudinal gradient in the northwestern Barents Sea. Nansen Legacy goals: https://arvenetternansen.com/our-goals/ |

Métodos de Amostragem
Sediment samples for analysis of macrofaunal diversity, abundance and biomass were taken from multiple 11.7 cm diameter cores inserted in 50x50 cm box cores. These cores were first used for sediment community oxygen respiration and then gently sieved completely through 250 µm for macrofaunal community estimates with cold seawater. The remaining biota was then preserved in a 4% buffered formaldehyde-seawater solution that was rose Bengal-stained. This work is part of RF3 of the Nansen Legacy project, cruise JC3, Feb/Mar 2022. Protocol version 10 was used (10.3.9, but smaller sieve size and different contact person).
Área de Estudo | Continental slope to the Nansen Basin north of Svalbard |

Descrição dos passos do método:
- In the home lab, samples were sorted to major taxa first under a stereomicroscope (partly at UiT, partly at IOPAN). Subsequently macrofauna taxa were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, enumerated and the weight taken. Meiofauna in the samples was identified to phylum level only. Fragments were not enumerated but weighed. Taxonomic identification my be improved for some individuals in the future.
