Description
On behalf of SalMar Farming AS, Aqua Kompetanse AS has conducted a survey of vulnerable species and habitats in shallow waters (0–50 m) and deep waters (>50 m). The purpose of the survey is to identify the presence and observed density of vulnerable species that may form habitats listed on the Norwegian Red List for Ecosystems and Habitat Types (Artsdatabanken, 2018), on OSPAR’s list of threatened and/or declining habitats (OSPAR 2008-06, revised in 2021), and among the proposed management-relevant habitat types for fisheries and aquaculture (Institute of Marine Research Report, 2024-16). At depths greater than 50 meters, the focus is mainly on corals, sponges, and sea pens. However, other red-listed and/or vulnerable species that live in close interaction with the three-dimensional habitats formed by the aforementioned groups will also be described when relevant. At depths shallower than 50 meters, the survey includes kelp forests, soft-bottom shoreline areas, coarse substrate bottoms, marine seagrass beds, exposed blue mussel beds, oysters, scallop populations, corals, sponges, sea pens, and any other red-listed shallow-water species. The investigation is based on the Institute of Marine Research’s proposed methodology for surveying vulnerable species and habitats in deep water (>50 meters depth) in connection with applications for marine aquaculture (Kutti and Husa 2021).

Méthodes d'échantillonnage
The area includes both deep and shallow waters and is dominated by a deep channel located beneath the planned facility, surrounded by shallower areas. Along the sides of the channel there is a steep slope, which is considered the most likely area for the occurrence of vulnerable species and habitats. The shallower areas are also assumed to have the highest probability of supporting maerl beds and kelp forests. Transects 1–10 were placed within 250 meters of the planned facility and were positioned with higher density, as this area was assumed to be the most affected by potential farm operations. The transects were also arranged to ensure coverage of the shallower areas within the survey area, and Transect 8 was placed within a channel to assess the potential presence of maerl beds. Transects 11–13 were located along a steep slope in the main current direction at dispersal depth, east of the planned facility. Steep walls are considered likely locations for vulnerable habitats, which may occur as deposits at the base of the slope. To investigate this, transects 14 and 15 were strategically placed at the foot of the slopes to detect any potential downslope accumulation. Kutti and Husa (2021, 2022) specify that approximately 3–4% of the survey area should be mapped. With a total transect length of 10,176 meters and a survey area of 1.33 km², this survey covers 3.82% of the area assuming a 5-meter transect width. This exceeds the minimum coverage recommended by Kutti and Husa (2021) and provides an additional margin to account for variability in the observed area. Reference: Illøkken, A. | Etendue de l'étude | The area investigated is located in Brønnøyfjorden, in Nærøysund municipality in Trøndelag county. The site lies within Brønnøyfjorden, south of Vikna, and the planned farm footprint extends across a channel with depths reaching down to 160 meters. Current measurements were conducted from 08 March 2024 to 10 April 2024, with results presented in Ølberg (2024). The measurements revealed a clear, unidirectional dispersal current at 70 m depth towards the east. Based on this, the survey area was extended to 1000 meters in this direction, in accordance with Kutti and Husa (2021). Bottom currents showed water exchange towards the west–southwest. Due to islets and skerries limiting dispersal in this direction, the survey area was restricted to 500 meters, following Kutti and Husa (2022). In all other directions from the farm footprint, the area was surveyed up to 250 meters from the facility. Areas shallower than 10 meters were not surveyed using ROV, as this method is not suitable for such shallow depths. As the survey area has not been mapped using multibeam bathymetry, transect placement was based on available chart data. The Naturebase mapping tool shows no registered features in the vicinity of the planned site location. The Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (Artsdatabanken) shows no records of red-listed marine species in the area. Reference: Illøkken, A. S.; Haddad, C.; Lund, R. (2024). Description des étapes de la méthode:
- Equipment: Aqua Kompetanse AS normally uses an Aegir 50 ROV from Ocean Robotics, equipped with a minimum of 3 x 3500 lumen LED lights, an HD camera with zoom, and Advanced Navigation underwater positioning with an accuracy of 1.5 meters per 100 meters. The positioning system is connected to a GNSS antenna from Advanced Navigation. The type of ROV used is selected based on the survey area, depth, and logistical considerations. All equipment used meets, at a minimum, the baseline requirements specified by Kutti and Husa (2021 and 2022). Reference: Illøkken, A. S.; Haddad, C.; Lund, R. (2024).
